Every year the garbage collection comes again. For MA48, Christmas is not a holiday, but a working day. Around 900 employees are on duty and take care of the full garbage garbage cans. There is a lot to do.
The gifts have been distributed, and the guests have been sent home. But gray boxes, red wrapping paper and golden bows remain. They decorate the waste garbage cans of the Viennese. “At Christmas time, there is about ten percent more volume in the garbage cans,” said Nicole Puzsar from MA 48 in an interview with Radio Wien.
“Please jump on it”
Because of the high volume, MA 48 asked the Viennese to help. So that the garbage collection can do its job quickly, the garbage should be shredded. “We don’t care how you do it, whether you jump on it, fold it up – it doesn’t matter. The main thing is to fit more in,” Puzsar said. That’s the only way to get the most out of the bins, he said.
Because of the pandemic, the amount of waste has shifted, he said. Due to online orders, more and more waste is being generated at home. The main issue is waste paper. MA 48 reckoned with 300 tons of waste paper garbage at Christmas time. In addition, there are 550 tons of residual waste.
557 Christmas tree collection points in the city starting December 27
Christmas trees can once again be handed in at a total of 557 collection points. Via this detour, the Christmas trees move from the living rooms to the waste incineration plant Pfaffenau. There, the trees are incinerated at 850 degrees Celsius to generate electricity and district heating for the people of Vienna. Every year, more than 170,000 discarded Christmas trees are brought to the collection points. That is around 835 tons.
